Coast Guard: Drone user responsible for damage caused

Main news | By Correspondent September 29, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - The Coast Guard has recently observed drones in the vicinity of their sailing and flying units several times. A recent example where a drone flew near their Coast Guard helicopter was during a rescue operation near Tera Kora / San Pedro. The Coast Guard helicopter was on the scene to rescue a young man but was confronted by a drone flying dangerously close to the helicopter.

The use of a drone in the vicinity of their flying units poses a great risk because collisions cannot be ruled out and it also distracts the pilots. That is why flying drones is bound by rules.

The website of the Curaçao Civil Aviation Authority (CCAA) contains the general rules and legislation regarding the use and flying of drones in Curaçao. One of the general rules mentioned there is that the operator of the drone is responsible for any damage that may occur in an accident and / or damage caused by his or her drone. Both owners and operators of a drone must be aware of and comply with these rules of the CCAA.

The Coast Guard makes a friendly but urgent request to all owners and operators of drones to take into account the general laws and regulations in this regard. In the interest of the safety of their people, the Coast Guard requires that all adhere to the general rules.
