WILLEMSTAD - In recent years, Caribbean destinations have increasingly positioned themselves as attractive options for Colombian travelers due to various factors such as pristine beaches, proximity, ease of access, cultural offerings, favorable climate, and affordability. As 2024 draws to a close, Curaçao has solidified its status as one of Colombians' favorite international destinations, according to the Colombian news outlet Valora Analitik, which specializes in economic, financial, and current affairs reporting across Colombia and Latin America.
Growing Visitor Numbers
The Colombian Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (ANATO) reported 5.17 million international departures from Colombia by December 2023, reflecting a nearly 5% increase compared to the previous year. Among these, approximately 42,000 Colombians traveled to Curaçao, marking a 22% growth in arrivals from the previous year.
Improved Connectivity
Curaçao benefits from direct flights from Bogotá, operated by airlines such as Wingo and Avianca. Avianca alone offers 11 flights per week. Recently, Wingo announced a new direct route from Medellín, Colombia’s second-largest market for Curaçao, further enhancing accessibility. These flights, lasting just two hours, make Curaçao one of the closest international destinations for Colombian travelers, reducing the hassle of layovers and maximizing time spent on the island.
This connectivity also enables Curaçao residents to travel easily to Colombia for leisure, strengthening ties between the two markets.
Beaches and Year-Round Warm Climate
According to a survey by Booking.com, visiting beaches ranks as a top priority for 62% of travelers in 2024. Curaçao’s 35 beaches, combined with its warm climate throughout the year, make it an ideal destination.
Curaçao caters not only to those seeking relaxation but also to tourists looking for active experiences. From watersports and eco-hikes to adventurous activities, the island offers a variety of options, appealing to diverse traveler profiles. While relaxation remains the primary objective, today’s tourists increasingly seek a blend of experiences, as noted by Colombia’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism.
Family and Solo Travel Opportunities
The diversity of activities available on Curaçao has made it a destination suited for all types of travelers. Sixty-eight percent of Colombian tourists plan to travel with their families, while 30% intend to travel solo, showcasing the island’s flexibility to accommodate different travel preferences.
Enhancing the Traveler Experience
Earlier this year, the Curaçao Tourism Office (CTO) opened an experiential center in the Nuestro Bogotá Shopping Center. This innovative space uses advanced technology, including the metaverse, interactive screens, games, and projections, to immerse visitors in Curaçao’s offerings. Visitors can explore activities, plan their trips, and engage with the island’s culture before even arriving.
Simplified Entry Requirements
One of Curaçao’s key advantages for Colombian travelers is the lack of visa requirements. Visitors need only a valid passport, a digital immigration card, and proof of yellow fever vaccination to enter the island.
Colombia: A Key Market for Curaçao
Hugo Clarinda, Director of the Curaçao Tourism Office, emphasized Colombia’s growing importance, stating, “Colombia has emerged as Curaçao’s third-largest market in 2024, with a 22% increase in arrivals compared to 2023. Additionally, Antioquia has become a key region for driving growth, supporting the local economy.”
With strong connectivity, diverse attractions, and simplified entry processes, Curaçao is poised to maintain its appeal among Colombian travelers while fostering economic and cultural ties between the two regions.
