Main news | By Correspondent October 13, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - A unit of the Royal Netherlands Army, 101 Engineer Battalion, will carry out construction work on the Wacawa training area and in the Christoffelpark. The construction of these projects is taking place within the Caribbean Beaver exercise, according to the Caribbean Defense.

Commissioned by the Commander of the Navy in the Caribbean, the unit will provide an upgrade to the Wacawa training area from 18 October. Both Dutch and foreign units will receive more facilities to train. Among other things, a residence location will be expanded with paved shelters and sanitary facilities and road improvements will be made in the training area.

In addition, the unit carries out restoration work in the Christoffelpark. They are also improving the Camp Dovale practice location with various minor activities such as installing windows and frames in containers and carrying out the associated earthwork.

To be able to fully carry out the construction work, 40 (military) construction vehicles were brought by ship. They arrive at the port on 14 October from where they are moved to Wacawa and Ascencion, accompanied by a front detachment.

All entering military personnel have been tested negative for COVID-19 in advance (no longer than 72 hours). This prevents the soldiers from taking corona to the island. In addition, social activities are minimized and the unit follows the guidelines that apply in Curaçao.

The unit comes with 120 soldiers who are distributed in Curaçao. The exercise lasts until November 7.
