Controversial proposal to deport Caribbean Dutch citizens remains on list PVV leader Wilders

Main news | By Correspondent January 12, 2024

THE HAGUE - PVV leader Geert Wilders has withdrawn a series of legislative proposals in an attempt to smooth negotiations with his counterparts in the VVD and NSC. Notably absent from the list of withdrawn plans is the controversial proposal to deport Dutch citizens from the Caribbean part of the Kingdom after a criminal conviction.

The initiative legislative proposal, initially submitted by former Members of Parliament Fritsma and De Graaf in 2014, aimed to implement strict measures against individuals from the Caribbean territories following a conviction. However, due to a lack of majority support at the time, the PVV chose to defer the consideration of the proposal.

While political dynamics have shifted towards the right in The Hague, potentially garnering more support for such measures, the likelihood of this particular legislative proposal materializing remains remarkably slim. The Council of State, a key advisory body, has unequivocally declared that the act of deporting Dutch citizens from the Caribbean would violate the prohibition of discrimination.

The decision to omit this proposal from the withdrawn list raises questions about the political motivations behind Wilders' actions. As the negotiations continue, the controversial nature of the proposal and its potential breach of discrimination laws will undoubtedly remain a topic of public scrutiny.
