Curaçao Enters Annual Flu and COVID-19 Season; GMN Urges Vigilance and Vaccination

Main news | By Correspondent December 3, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – The Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN) reports that the annual season of respiratory infections— including influenza and COVID-19—has begun on Curaçao. This seasonal rise typically occurs at the end of the year and the beginning of the next. In cooperation with general practitioners, the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) and local laboratories, GMN is closely monitoring infection trends across the community.

The flu shot is now available through family doctors and local pharmacies. A new COVID-19 vaccine, based on the latest variant, will be offered starting Wednesday at the Infectious Disease Control Department of G&GZ on Piscaderweg. Both vaccines are intended for high-risk groups as well as individuals who wish to increase their protection.

Risk groups include people aged 60 and older, adults aged 18–59 with medical vulnerabilities or severe obesity, healthcare workers with direct patient contact and residents of long-term care facilities.

According to GMN, symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, congestion, muscle pain or fatigue may occur with both flu and COVID-19. Most people recover within one to two weeks. Those requiring medical attention are urged to stay home and contact their general practitioner or the GP emergency line by phone.

Basic hygiene measures remain essential to prevent further spread, the ministry adds. This includes coughing into tissues, washing hands frequently, keeping distance where possible and cleaning shared surfaces.

COVID-19 vaccinations at G&GZ are available Monday through Thursday from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. and from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. Homebound individuals may call 514-2860 to schedule a home or care-facility appointment.
