Curaçao police angry about RTL documentary

Main news | By Correspondent October 27, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - The Dutch documentary maker Ewout Genemans has incurred the wrath of the Curacao police. His documentary about "the dark side" of Curacao, broadcast by the Dutch TV channel RTL5 on Monday, has not been taken lightly by the corps leadership. Legal action is being considered.

In the documentary, it seems that the local police cooperated on the recordings. This was done because Genemans was hired by the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee (Dutch Royal Police) to make a report about the fight against crime on the island.

The local police force, but also others in Willemstad, believe that the television viewer is presented with an exaggeratedly one-sided negative image of Curaçao. Moreover, the documentary maker would not have kept the promise to show the program to the police leadership before the broadcast.

Two weeks ago, RTL broadcast a documentary made by Genemans on Bonaire about the “most luxurious prison in South America”.
