Curaçao still has a lot to do in terms of security

WILLEMSTAD - There is still a lot to be done before we can speak of a complete and effective approach to security in Curaçao. This is the conclusion of the Council for Law Enforcement after investigation.

According to the Council, ensuring security is not only a task of the judiciary, but must be an integrated approach in which all groups within the community contribute.

In order to contribute to the best possible security in the community, the Council conducted an inspection investigation into the integrality of the approach to security policy in the areas of cyber security, terrorism and border surveillance.

By means of this investigation, the Board has also gained insight into the extent to which the justice column is able to implement the policy.

During this investigation, the Board examined the extent to which specific legislation and policy exist. The Council's conclusion is that specific legislation, regulations, and policy must be developed, especially in the areas of cyber security and terrorism.

In the field of border surveillance, a 'baseline study' has been made that has been approved by the Four Countries Judicial Consultation. Work is now underway on its implementation.

Although hard work is being done to integrate the approach, the Council has come to the conclusion that, with the exception of border surveillance, a lot of work needs to be done in the other areas to arrive at a truly integrated approach.

Regarding the question of which security level applies to Curaçao, the Board has come to the conclusion that the security level cannot be determined in any of the areas studied. The recommendation is therefore to periodically draw up the necessary threat and risk analyses in all these areas.
