DOEN education union criticizes payment of holiday pay to ex-ministers

Main news | By Correspondent February 25, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - Many teachers in Curaçao have become demotivated by the decision to pay out the unused vacation days of the Rhuggenaath cabinet. That is what the DOEN education union says in a press release.

The union thinks it is bad that civil servants and like-minded people have been cut by 12.5 percent on their salary. Moreover, teachers often pay for materials to teach themselves, because there is no money for education.

The sums to which the former ministers are entitled to goes against everything the teachers stand for, says DOEN. The alleged amounts vary between 86,000 (Armin Konket) and 4,000 (Steven Croes) guilders.

The union will therefore deal with this subject internally. According to DOEN, a large proportion of teachers are considering leaving education. They feel unappreciated. The pandemic has exacerbated the discontent. Investments are not forthcoming. There is also no guidance and policy to deal with the consequences of the corona crisis.
