Dutch Parliament: Fight human trafficking in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom together

Main news | By Correspondent December 3, 2021

THE HAGUE - The Dutch government must explore the possibilities of jointly combating human trafficking in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom and improving the reception of victims. A motion to that effect by Don Ceder (ChristenUnie) has been adopted by an overwhelming majority by the Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament. Only the PVV party voted against. The motion reads as follows:

Having heard the deliberations, the Chamber has maintained that there is no overall picture of the nature and extent of human trafficking in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom and that the cabinet therefore wants to focus on strengthening the information position;

Noting that the National Rapporteur on Human Trafficking in the European Netherlands identifies, interprets, reports and advises on developments in the field of human trafficking, but has no mandate on the BES islands or in the countries;

Considering that in 2022 a revision of the Memorandum of Understanding of cooperation to prevent and combat human trafficking and human smuggling will take place in the Kingdom;

In the run-up to the revision of that Memorandum of Understanding, requests the government to explore, together with the islands, the possibility, willingness and requirements to arrive at a joint fight against human trafficking in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom and to improve the reception of victims, and the way in which the European Netherlands can support the Caribbean islands in this regard, and proceed to the order of the day.
