Dutch Parliament wants to deal with COHO law carefully, but also quickly (before summer recess)

Main news | By Correspondent March 9, 2022

THE HAGUE - The Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament is going to try to have the consensus national law on the Caribbean Agency for Reform and Development (COHO) come into force before the summer recess. At the same time, it was emphasized today in a so-called procedure meeting of the Parliamentary Committee for Kingdom Relations, the process must be careful. For this reason, the committee wishes to be informed in various ways, including through a meeting with the Council of State.

The parliamentary debate starts with a written round of questions. All four parliaments can provide written comments and ask questions to which the State Secretary for Kingdom Relations Van Huffelen will subsequently respond (again in writing). It is possible that the Chamber will then call for an oral legislative consultation. Getting the COHO law adopted in the Senate before the summer recess also requires an “enormous pace”, warned committee chair Mariëlle Paul.

In any case, the Chamber is speeding up: the political factions will have 6 weeks to provide their (written) response. As far as is known, the Parliaments of Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten have not yet set a date for their contribution.
