Main news | By Correspondent January 18, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - Former director of the Security Service Curaçao (VDC) Michaël Römer is currently in Curaçao. Since 2019, he has been stationed at Interpol's headquarters in France, as a representative of the Ministry of General Affairs.

During his stay on the island, he spoke with Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas about his work at the international organization that supports police organizations in preventing and fighting crime.

According to Römer, it is important that cross-border police and judicial cooperation is intensified in the region. He also proposed that Curaçao have an inventory carried out into the benefits of membership at Interpol. Curaçao pays for this membership. He also suggested investigating in which areas Curaçao could receive help from the international organization. Whether on a strategic, tactical, operational level or in the form of international cooperation.

Interpol supports member states in high-impact cases, such as cybercrime. The organization has a lot of experience in strengthening the cyber security of member states. In addition, Interpol is active in the fight against terrorism, money laundering and the transport of drugs, weapons and intellectual property.

Furthermore, Römer recommended that Interpol's National Central Bureau participate more often in inter-ministerial committees. Finally, he encouraged Pisas to visit Interpol's headquarters in France. This will enable him, as Minister of Justice, to gain a better idea of the benefits of Interpol and to strengthen ties with this international organization.
