Gerstenbluth: "Corona peak over, but still many infections"

Main news | By Correspondent January 28, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - It seems that we are past the corona peak. That is according to epidemiologist Dr. Izzy Gerstenbluth during the most recent press conference. However, according to Gerstenbluth, the measures cannot yet be completely abandoned.

“The number of infections per day is still very high. The reported cases are just the tip of the iceberg," said the epidemiologist. “There are still people who don't get tested or only do a self-test.” Gerstenbluth warns not to look too optimistically at the numbers.

About 60% of the population is vaccinated. It is precisely the vulnerable groups that appear to be vaccinated less. According to Gerstenbluth, less than thirty percent of all elderly people have received a booster shot to date.

Vaccinations are currently taking place at two locations. Both locations are open all week, including walk-ins. “Soon the vaccination team will go into the neighborhood and an information campaign will be launched,” says immunologist Ashley Duits.

Flow and Digicel customers will receive an SMS in the coming days with a call to get vaccinated. “Vaccination is one of the tools to combat the number of infections,” says Duits.
