WILLEMSTAD - During the past week, the Curaçao people experienced no fewer than three major power outages (blackouts) and some neighborhoods also had a temporary interruption in the water supply.
The Curaçao government fully understands the irritation caused by the malfunctions and the material damage for some of Aqualectra’s customers as a result.

Some ministers, including Minister Steven Martina, met with the management of Aqualectra on Sunday December 13, being the company responsible for the supply of water and electricity in Curaçao.
The purpose of the meeting was to give the government a better insight into the cause of the instability in the supply of water and electricity in the past week, but also to obtain information whether the people can count on Aqualectra to have the stability to perform the usual to guarantee deliveries.
In addition to the meeting with Aqualectra, the government also approached authorities within the Disaster Response Organization (RBO) to make an inventory of which areas suffered damages or at risk as a result of the "blackouts" that have taken place.
This could include securing health care at hospitals, nursing homes and other vulnerable institutions. The important role of the Meteorological Service in this was also discussed, because they already have experience in dealing with situations where there is no water or electricity, for example after a hurricane.
The government recognizes the seriousness of this situation and will continue to monitor the progress of the electricity supply.
