Member States to UNESCO during its 40th General Conference in 2019 in Paris accepted the proposal for 14 March to be the International Day of Mathematics. UNESCO considers the mastery of mathematics to be important for the development of the child and its future. It is therefore important that youngsters and adults are stimulated to understand, master and apply mathematics.
The objective of this month is to dedicate towards training, awareness, and development of knowledge, capacity and use of mathematics in Curaçao so as to strengthen the community to be prepared to be able to compete better in the market. Furthermore attention will be given to the International Day of Mathematics14 of March and the “The Big Calculation Day " held yearly on March 24.
Proclamation of this month is also aimed at stimulating the country to participate actively in this international initiative of UNESCO and to encourage organisations and the community to dedicate attention on awareness, knowledge and application of mathematics as of March 2021 with different activities during the Month of Mathematics. The above mentioned entities will collaborate with schools, other relevant organisations and the community to work on the training, awareness and activities related to this month and beyond. UNESCO encourages countries to work on promoting the importance of mathematics in daily life, in this way also working towards implementation of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and in particular SDG 4 Quality Education.
