Government Provides Update on Air Traffic Safety Over Curaçao

Main news | By Press release December 18, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas and the Government of Curaçao say they are closely monitoring developments related to air traffic safety in the region and remain in continuous contact with partners within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and internationally.

In recent days, several incidents involving civilian and military aircraft have occurred in Curaçao’s airspace. Prime Minister Pisas stressed that these incidents are being taken very seriously, particularly in light of the potential risks to aviation safety.

Following direct contact with the United States Consul General in Curaçao, the Prime Minister received confirmation that multiple U.S. government agencies—including the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Southern Command, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)—are in active discussions with the Dutch Caribbean Air Navigation Service Provider (DC-ANSP). The objective of these talks is to prevent similar incidents from occurring in Curaçao’s airspace in the future.

According to the government, assurances have been given that aviation and maritime authorities will closely monitor both civilian and military traffic in the region. A key agreement reached is that U.S. military aircraft will activate their transponders while operating in Curaçao’s airspace, ensuring they remain visible to local air traffic control authorities.

The U.S. representation has also contacted several airlines and cruise companies to ensure they are fully informed about the current situation and to confirm that appropriate measures are being taken to guarantee the safe and orderly flow of air and maritime traffic.

Prime Minister Pisas emphasized that there are currently no indications of an immediate threat to Curaçao. He reaffirmed that safety remains the government’s top priority and stated that the situation will continue to be closely monitored. The government, he said, will keep the public informed should there be any further developments.
