Governor Calls for Responsibility, Unity and Strategic Choices in 2026 New Year Address

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao entered 2026 with a message of calm, reflection and responsibility, as the Governor delivered a wide-ranging New Year’s address during the traditional New Year’s reception at Fort Amsterdam on Monday evening. The speech came against the backdrop of heightened regional tensions following recent events in Venezuela, which briefly caused uncertainty on the island.

The Governor acknowledged that developments in Venezuela over the past weekend had created concern among residents, but praised the measured response on the island and noted that the effects were short-lived. Special recognition was given to the presence of the Dutch Minister of Defense, whose visit was described as a clear reminder of the importance of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in safeguarding Curaçao’s security. In times of regional instability, the Governor stressed, Curaçao’s position within the Kingdom provides essential stability and reassurance.

Looking back on 2025, the Governor described the year as a strong one for Curaçao. Economic growth, robust tourism figures and new investments marked a period of renewed confidence. Particular pride was expressed in Curaçao’s historic qualification for the FIFA World Cup, an achievement described as unprecedented for the smallest country ever to reach the tournament. Beyond statistics, the Governor highlighted a renewed sense of energy across the island, visible in cultural expression, entrepreneurial creativity and national pride.

At the same time, the speech emphasized that progress should not obscure deeper challenges. Referencing the exhibition “Despensa i Pordon” at the Curaçao Museum and the recent apologies for the slavery past by Dutch leaders, the Governor stressed the importance of acknowledging history while actively shaping the future. The idea of “a comma, not a period” was used to underline that reflection must lead to action and responsibility.

Several structural challenges were outlined. Curaçao’s economic shift from industry to tourism has brought prosperity, but also increased vulnerability to geopolitical and economic shocks. The Governor cautioned against growth for its own sake and warned of the risk of losing cultural authenticity, which remains a core part of the island’s appeal. Environmental protection was also highlighted as a pressing responsibility, with pollution and environmental degradation posing long-term threats to the island’s natural assets and livability.

Social issues received particular attention. The Governor noted that not all residents benefit equally from economic growth, pointing to persistent inequality, poverty, pressure on healthcare and pensions, and concerns about safety, especially for women. Informal employment continues to grow faster than formal jobs, creating additional strain on social systems. According to the Governor, sustainable progress must ensure that no one is left behind.

Despite these challenges, the outlook for Curaçao remains hopeful. The Governor pointed to opportunities beyond tourism, including the creative sector, digital development, renewable energy and the growth potential of small and medium-sized businesses. Greater cooperation within the Kingdom, particularly among the Caribbean partners, was described as a strength rather than a weakness. Learning from one another and engaging in equal, well-prepared partnerships with the Netherlands were presented as key to future resilience.

The address framed 2026 as a decisive year. Curaçao, the Governor said, stands at a crossroads: continue along the familiar path, or make deliberate choices toward a more diversified, resilient and socially just economy. Investment in education, entrepreneurship and sustainable energy, along with balanced and responsible tourism development, were highlighted as essential steps.

Concluding the speech, the Governor called on the community to enter the new year with hope, realism and determination. The message was clear: Curaçao’s future depends on conscious choices made today. Guests were then invited to raise a glass to a healthy, prosperous and inspiring 2026.
