WILLEMSTAD - In response to the longstanding issue of extended waiting times for surgical procedures at the operating room, outpatient clinics, and radiology examinations at the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC), the Health Inspection has intervened. Despite some fluctuations, the waiting lists have remained unacceptably long and have shown signs of further growth.
A significant shortage of support staff, including OK (operating room) assistants and anesthesia assistants, has contributed to this challenge. Despite recent efforts by management, the personnel reduction has hindered progress, and there is currently no short-term solution to alleviate the growing waiting list.
Fortunately, Antillean Adventist Hospital (Advent Ziekenhuis) has available capacity to accommodate both surgical and radiology patients.
Recognizing the potential risks to patient care, the Health Inspection has taken proactive measures to address the increase in the waiting list. A comprehensive investigation, requested by the Minister of Public Health, is currently underway and nearing completion.
Effective Monday, June 5, 2023, as part of the inspection's intervention, a significant number of patients who have been on the surgical waiting list for more than six weeks will be referred to Advent Hospital by CMC.
Additionally, starting from the same date, patients with a waiting time exceeding six weeks for a radiology examination will also be directed to Advent Hospital. Thanks to the long-standing digital connectivity between CMC and Advent Hospital's radiology departments, the results will be promptly available to CMC.
Moreover, patients on the waiting list for more than six weeks for surgery or a radiology examination may contact Advent Hospital. A thorough evaluation will determine whether they should be referred for surgery or a radiology examination at Advent Hospital.
The inspection aims to create a temporary yet balanced solution to address the emerged waiting list and ensure optimal patient care.
