Human Rights Defense calls for reunification between mother and toddler

Main news | By Correspondent February 11, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The two-year-old girl who sailed on a boat with thirteen other Venezuelans this week must be reunited with her mother. That is what Human Rights Defense Curaçao demands.

The girl was separated from her mother when the boat they were on was intercepted by the Coast Guard on Wednesday. On arrival ashore, the adults were handed over to the police and are now in custody.

Since then, the girl has lived with her grandfather. He made the crossing earlier and has been on Curaçao as a refugee since 2020. Human Rights Defense invokes Article 9 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which prohibits the separation of parents and children.

Human Rights Defense believes that the girl should be reunited with her mother as soon as possible.
