WILLEMSTAD - In the context of gaining knowledge and insight into the complexity of human trafficking, the Taskforce Human Trafficking and Human Smuggling, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), recently held a training course to prevent human trafficking.

The training was intended for the personnel of the Curaçao Police Corps (KPC), inspectors of the labor inspectorate of the Ministry of Social Development, Labor and Welfare, KPC Unit for Foreigners Supervision and Investigation, the Social Insurance Bank (SVB) and Tax Accountant Bureau (SOAB). These entities currently work together in teams and, among other things, carry out inspections in the labor sector, especially in the construction sector. During the checks, they are confronted with illegal practices in this sector that can lead to the exploitation of workers. This is categorized as human trafficking.

The training gave every professional the much-needed basic knowledge about human trafficking. It taught the participant to recognize signals, it provided practical tools and with an experience expert they learned how to deal with a (presumed) victim. An experienced trainer from Guayana, Georgetown was recruited to provide the training. The training took one and a half day.
