PHILIPSBURG - Sint Maartens President of the Parliament Grisha Heyliger-Marten, who will chair the Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation in the coming days, has embraced the initiative bill of the Dutch VVD party to make it easier for Caribbean countries to leave the Kingdom in her opening speech. She expressed her thanks to Member of Parliament Roelien Kamminga for taking charge of the bill submitted by her predecessor André Bosman.

At the end of her speech, Heyliger-Marten called on “to work towards a Kingdom statute that puts an end to all disputes between us as Kingdom partners. A Kingdom statute that ensures real capacity building in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom and cooperation based on equality, eliminates the democratic deficit and fully complies with all international laws. Wouldn't that be the best 'birthday gift' we could give the citizens of the entire Kingdom on the 70th anniversary of the Statute in 2024?”
