KEM wants clarification about party financing law violators

Main news | By Correspondent February 23, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - Opposition party KEM wants clarification about the 72 election candidates who have not yet accounted for their donations to the Supreme Electoral Council (SER).

Member of Parliament Michelangelo Martines sent a letter to Minister of Administration, Planning and Services Ornelio Martina asking why actions have not been taken so far.

Candidates who stand for election must account for donations they receive. This is stated in the Party Financing Act. All donations of 5000 guilders or more received between nomination day and election day must be reported to the SER, even if no donations are received.

The deadline for the list was April 19, 2021. Between April and August, the SER attempted to receive the missing lists. Subsequently, in September, the SER sent a list of candidates who had not communicated anything to the Attorney General (PG). The PG now has to decide if he is going to prosecute.

Martines also wants to know what action is being taken. In response to Martines' letter, the minister says that candidates who have not passed on the list can face a prison sentence of up to 3 months and/or a fine of up to 10,000 guilders.
