KLM: U.S. Closure of Venezuelan Airspace Has No Impact on Flights to Curaçao and Aruba

AMSTELVEEN, WILLEMSTAD - The declaration by U.S. President Donald Trump that Venezuelan airspace should be considered “closed” will not affect KLM flights to Curaçao, Aruba, or other Caribbean destinations, the airline confirmed on Friday.

KLM’s office in Willemstad stated that the carrier has already avoided Venezuelan airspace for more than a week, meaning Trump’s announcement brings no operational changes to flights serving the Dutch Caribbean.

No Changes for Flights to Curaçao and Aruba

According to KLM, its routes to the Caribbean part of the Kingdom continue normally. Aircraft are already routed around Venezuelan territory as a precaution due to earlier warnings from U.S. authorities.

However, KLM notes that the need to divert around Venezuela may increase flight times for other routes to South American destinations that normally rely on more direct air corridors.

U.S. Aviation Warning Issued Earlier

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had already warned major airlines last week about a “potentially dangerous situation” over Venezuela, citing:

deteriorating security conditions

heightened military activity in and around the country

These warnings prompted many carriers — including KLM — to adjust routes in advance of Trump’s announcement.

Regional Impact Still Monitored

Although flights connecting Amsterdam with Curaçao and Aruba remain unaffected, the evolving situation in Venezuelan airspace continues to be monitored closely by airlines and aviation authorities throughout the region.

For now, travelers to the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can expect continued normal service, even as geopolitical tensions rise just south of the islands.
