Knops: Freeze liquidity support; Curaçao falls short when it comes to sheltering Venezuelans

Main news | By Correspondent January 6, 2022

THE HAGUE - Curaçao falls short in the reception of Venezuelan migrants/refugees on crucial immaterial aspects. For that reason, the Netherlands will not yet pay the last part of a promised financial contribution to ensure that the reception complies with international human rights law.

Outgoing Undersecretary Raymond Knops of Kingdom Relations wrote this to the Lower House of the Dutch Parliament today in response to the alarming report "Still not safe: Venezuelans do not receive protection in Curaçao" by Amnesty International. At the same time, the undersecretary emphasizes that immigration policy is a national matter. “The prospect of enforcement action in a Caribbean country by the Kingdom in the event of human rights violations is small,” said Knops.

But because Curaçao does not meet the conditions attached to the financial support from The Hague to improve the situation of the Venezuelans residing on the island, it has been decided to freeze the last contribution.
