Liquidity support for the Netherlands in danger now that the new coalition does not want to deal with COHO

WILLEMSTAD - The liquidity support of the Netherlands to Curaçao is in danger now that the new coalition has declined an invitation from Undersecretary of Kingdom Relations Raymond Knops to participate in the consultations about COHO.

Although the invitation is addressed to the incumbent and now caretaker government, Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath argues that it is up to the new coalition to take the next step and that the consultations on the Caribbean Body for Reform and Development must now be resumed. Ruthmilda Larmonie-Cecilia announces that she is declining the invitation.

Approval with COHO is a condition for the third tranche of liquidity support. Just like the adjustment of the terms of employment for top officials in the (semi-) public sector and the lowering of the salaries of ministers and members of parliament. Legislation for this is ready, but Parliament has not yet adopted it.

According to outgoing Prime Minister Rhuggenaath, the next tranche of liquidity support is urgently needed due to the pressure on finances due to the corona measures. The Kingdom Council of Ministers will decide about further financing for Curaçao in mid-June.
