WILLEMSTAD - The central committee meeting of January 18 on consumer prices has been cancelled. Minister Ruisandro Cijntje of Economic Development (MEO) together with the consumer association would discuss the rising prices in the stores with the Members of Parliament.
Container prices have risen sharply worldwide. This also means that the import prices for Curaçao will become more expensive. During a press conference in November, the minister indicated that a consumer authority will be set up to help with the high prices.
In addition, the government would carry out extra checks at supermarkets and other stores. With the help of the authority, legal action could also be taken against unfair or excessive prices. Container prices are also closely monitored.
“Better cooperation with the consumer association for price comparisons is essential,” emphasizes Cijntje. The meeting with the minister has been postponed until further notice.
