MEO Announces Significant Reduction in Water and Electricity Rates for 2025

Main news | By Correspondent December 27, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao’s Ministry of Economic Development (MEO) has announced a substantial reduction in water and electricity rates, set to take effect in the first quarter of 2025.

The adjustment is part of a new tariff structure designed to lower costs for households and businesses. MEO Minister Charles Cooper (MFK) emphasized that this measure aims to ease the financial burden on citizens while positively impacting the prices of goods and services across the island.

Toward a Greener Future

Minister Cooper also highlighted ongoing efforts to move toward a more sustainable energy future. Additional wind turbines in Koral Tabak are expected to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, contributing to further cost savings in the long term.

“Agricultural producers will also benefit from cheaper irrigation water, enabling them to grow local produce at more competitive prices,” Cooper stated.

Broad Economic Benefits

The new tariff structure aligns with the government’s broader strategy to support economic development and environmental sustainability, aiming to provide tangible benefits to both citizens and businesses. The initiative is expected to stimulate local agriculture, reduce living costs, and encourage the use of renewable energy.

This announcement marks a significant step toward making utilities more affordable while promoting a greener future for Curaçao.
