WILLEMSTAD - The budget of the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) shows that there is a deficit of five million guilders per month. This was announced by Minister of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN) Dorothy Pietersz-Janga during a press conference on Thursday.
The hospital has sent a letter to the government asking for financial assistance. Pietersz-Janga emphasizes that the government is very concerned about the deficits and that a working group has been set up to structurally reduce costs.
Currently 550 million guilders is spent on health care, of which 200 million for the CMC and 20 to 25 million for the Advent hospital.
Since the start of the corona pandemic, 4.8 million guilders have gone to the CMC. According to the minister, the government has also contributed to the hospital's budget in other ways. In addition, the CMC also received an additional 1.9 million guilders.
“There will now have to be a care authority that will deal with the shortfalls,” said the minister. “The government will try to help as much as possible.”
