New acute care training started on five islands

Main news | By Correspondent March 23, 2022

THE HAGUE - Since the start of the pandemic, there has been a major shortage of nurses in acute care wards on the Dutch Caribbean islands. For this reason, the 'Basis Acute Care' (BAZ) training was set up in collaboration with the hospitals of five islands. Caribha reports this in a press release.

The new training is the initiative of the Amsterdam UMC VUmc Academy and in collaboration with the Dutch Caribbean Hospital Alliance. Commissioned by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), the VUmc Academy trains nurses in hospitals in Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire, Sint Maarten and Sint Eustatius.

This is under the supervision of the State Secretary of Health, Welfare and Sport of the Netherlands M. van Ooijen, and the Ministers of Health of Aruba (D. Oduber), Curaçao (D. Pietersz-Janga) and Sint Maarten (O. Ottley).

The aim of the training program is that the islands become more flexible and can therefore respond better to acute care situations, such as during a pandemic. The training is followed by more than 100 nurses from all five islands.

The first 31 nurses will receive their certificates on Monday in the presence of the State Secretary for Health, Welfare and Sport of the Netherlands Maarten van Ooijen, the Minister of Health of Curaçao Dorothy Pietersz-Janga and the other Ministers of Health.
