WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Justice announced on Sunday evening that a new reception center for undocumented migrants will be constructed. This will be financed by the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK), Curaçao will bear the operating costs.

Venezuelans in particular will be accommodated there. Due to the poor economic conditions in their own country, many try to flee to nearby Curaçao, Aruba and Colombia.

International organizations have long objected to the way in which Curaçao receives illegal immigrants. The current barracks are very austere. The new center will soon include a library, a visitor area and sports fields.

The new building will partly replace the current barracks, which are located on the grounds of the SDKK prison. Additional staff will be hired to meet international standards.

The reception capacity will soon be 70 places, 35 men and 35 women can be accommodated. Men and women are placed separately. The expected delivery is in March 2022, a month later the installation will be ready and the commissioning will take place.
