WILLEMSTAD - Several Members of Parliament wonder whether the Emergency Act aimed at combating Covid-19 is still necessary. This proportionality was discussed during a Parliament meeting yesterday. Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas pointed out in his response that he does not think the law has been used disproportionately so far.

Every time new measures have to be taken, they are first analyzed in detail by the crisis team, based on criteria from epidemiology. According to Pisas, this also takes into account the economy and social consequences. "The analysis produces a judgment on the basis of which the corona measures are scaled up or down."

In addition, the law does not give the minister unlimited authority to do whatever he wants. Pisas also underlines that every citizen has the right to go to court to prove his/her right when he/she feels wronged.

Pisas emphasizes that the law is only used during emergencies, such as the Covid-19 pandemic. To be sure of an emergency, various ministerial regulations have been included in the law to regulate the measures. "There has been no abuse and there will be no abuse of the law," Pisas said.
