WILLEMSTAD - As a result of a significant increase in the number of corona infections in recent days, Curaçao has introduced new measures. For example, events with more than a hundred people are prohibited, dance parties are no longer allowed. People are allowed to gather in private with a maximum of four people.
The Curaçao government announced the measures on Wednesday. The number of new infections on the island rose from 23 new cases on Sunday to 217 on Thursday. A total of 662 active infections were registered on Thursday. Eleven patients are in hospital, five of which are in intensive care. No infections with the omicron variant have yet been identified on the island.
People over sixty in Curaçao can recently receive a booster shot. In the short term, this should also be possible for everyone over the age of eighteen. The Netherlands will send new vaccines for this on Thursday, Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas announced on Wednesday.
The current curfew between 3:00 AM and 4:30 AM will remain in effect. It is also mandatory to wear a face mask when visiting shops, hairdressers, and casinos, on public transport and at funerals.
