Opposition demands to see contract with Klesch Group

WILLEMSTAD - During a protest meeting on Wilhelminaplein in Willemstad, leaders of the opposition in parliament were called upon by a small group of their supporters to convene a public meeting within four times 24 hours, in which they demanded that the 'Non-Disclosure Agreement' be waived and openness is given to the deal with Klesch.

The "Union pa Kòrsou" movement, which opposes the takeover process of the Isla refinery by the Klesch Group, could count on a small crowd of no more than 300 people during a protest meeting on Wilhelminaplein last Sunday.

There were speakers from mainly the opposition parties MFK and PS, but also from extra-parliamentary politicians, Union pa Kòrsou (René Rosalia) and Action group Kas (Humphrey Davelaar).

Union pa Kòrsou is of the opinion that Curacao itself can run the refinery, despite the counter-reaction that running a refinery is a costly business, especially if it is necessary to invest in a clean refinery.

Kas action group believes that Refineria di Kòrsou (RdK) should be closed down and that the government’s properties should be transferred to Domain Management. The reserve money from RdK can flow back into the treasury, as a result of which the Minister of Finance no longer has to take measures that the people can no longer bear, according to Davelaar.

In the meantime, 4,000 signatures have been collected from people who support the resistance. The group remains active and will continue to protest during the coming period.
