WILLEMSTAD – On January 7, 2026, Curaçao’s Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas held a constructive meeting with the Kingdom of the Netherlands’ Minister of Defence, Ruben Brekelmans, who is currently visiting Curaçao on a working visit.
The leaders discussed a range of key topics related to defence responsibilities and cooperation between the Netherlands and the Caribbean countries within the Kingdom. The meeting included an assessment of recent regional developments, particularly in light of tensions between Venezuela and the United States.

Brekelmans stated that the Dutch Ministry of Defence has reviewed various scenarios, and based on current analyses, there is no immediate external military threat to Curaçao or the surrounding region. This assessment aligns with broader statements by Dutch defence officials that there is no current threat to the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom, though preparations remain in place if needed.
Despite the absence of an acute threat, both the Kingdom government and the government of Curaçao will continue to closely monitor the situation and maintain ongoing communication. The two sides agreed to conduct further joint analysis of developments so that the Kingdom’s security strategy—especially for the Caribbean—can be adjusted if necessary.
The discussions took place in an open and constructive atmosphere, with an emphasis on the importance of collaboration and mutual understanding within the Kingdom.
