WILLEMSTAD - From September 1, the government of Curaçao will apply a new regulation for the basic food basket, the Makuto Básiko 2022. The list of products has been expanded and instead of a maximum price setting, the retailer's margin is now limited to a maximum.
In the new regulation, the government does not determine the maximum price for the majority of products, but the maximum margin that a retailer may use on the product.
The only two products for which a maximum price has been established are Kipashi di Awa (bread) and eggs from the battery cage.
The government's motive for the changes is that due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the financial crisis, many people are barely able to keep their heads above water.
In addition, due to global developments and Curaçao's dependence on imports, prices have risen enormously, and there seems to be no end to this for the time being.
