Rhuggenaath: last warning after record number of infections

WILLEMSTAD - "If we don't adhere to the measures, we will end up in a lockdown," said Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath. "If we don't do it ourselves, the lockdown will come from abroad."

Rhuggenaath makes the statement on Wednesday during a 'Report of the Day' after the announcement of 105 new infections. The record number of infections follows after the testing of no less than 553 people. Never before have so many people been tested in one day.

During an emotional address, the Prime Minister called on citizens to take their own responsibility. He was assisted in this by epidemiologist Dr. Izzy Gerstenbluth. "If the number of infections per day remains this high and continues to rise, we will have to slow down the virus and take stricter measures," said Gerstenbluth.

Rhuggenaath gave an example for more stringent measures in Plachi di Dia (license plate of the day), whereby certain license plates are allowed to drive on certain days, and a lockdown. "It seems almost inevitable," said the prime minister.

The number of active infections is currently at 869. There are ten people in the hospital.
