Selikor looking for a solution with unions

Main news | By Correspondent July 12, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - Selikor's interim management spoke on Monday with the trade unions ABVO and BTG about employees' specific problems. The garbage collectors stopped working on Monday due to the shortage of garbage trucks.

A large part of the trucks is out of service so the work continues to pile up. Selikor is well behind schedule for garbage collection in several neighborhoods. According to the activist garbage collectors, the workload is too high. They also fear for their health because of the very unhygienic situation of garbage that remains outside for a long time.

The interim management says in a press release that it is surprised by the action of the employees. The management has only been in place since July 1 but would have immediately started tackling the problems. Several meetings have been held regarding the availability of garbage trucks and communication with the community.

According to Selikor, parts have been ordered from abroad for the trucks. Due to the worldwide delay in the shipping freight, the delivery has been delayed. “The vision for the next three to four years is to replace three garbage trucks a year and purchase three new ones,” said the management. “All this is only possible if the government fulfills its agreements by paying Selikor.”

Talks with the unions will be held again on Tuesday. Management apologizes for the delay and is determined to resolve the matter.
