Shortage of Gastroenterologists Causes Ongoing Problems at CMC

Main news | By Correspondent December 31, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The persistent shortage of gastroenterologists (MDL specialists) is once again causing issues at the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC). During the New Year’s period, there will be no specialists available for emergency on-call duties.

The shortage of MDL specialists has been an ongoing problem for CMC. Hospital director Gilbert Martina stated that he has repeatedly alerted Inspector General of Public Health Sirving Keli about the lack of specialists, but according to Martina, no action has been taken so far.

Conflicting Statements

Keli maintains that an MDL specialist is on standby for emergencies during the first two weeks of the year, “though it comes at the expense of their personal lives.” However, Martina, who is in close contact with the medical specialists, disputes Keli’s claim.

Suboptimal Situation

Martina describes the current situation as "suboptimal." Patients admitted to CMC with acute gastrointestinal, liver, or pancreatic issues cannot always be treated by an MDL specialist. In such cases, they are attended to by doctors from other specialties.

Financial Challenges

The shortage of gastroenterologists is part of a broader issue. Since its opening, the Curaçao Medical Center has faced significant financial difficulties, making it challenging to attract sufficient qualified medical staff and offer them competitive salaries.
