SOAW confirms: Employer may not demand vaccination

WILLEMSTAD - Employees who are obliged to be vaccinated against the coronavirus can report this anonymously to the Ministry of SOAW. A vaccination obligation by employers is not permitted.

Randolph Gijsbertha of the Ministry of Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW), Labor sector, confirmed this today in a telephone conversation with the Curaçao Consumers Interest foundation.

The foundation recently sounded the alarm when reports circulated that there are employers in Curaçao who require their employees to be vaccinated. The consumer foundation urged the government to take action.

According to Consumers Interests, various emails had already been sent to the SOAW ministry asking what the ministry is going to do towards employers who demand vaccination of its staff. But also where employees can report this anonymously.

“Waiting for employees to report that they have been fired is putting the cart before the horse. Because employees do not dare to argue against employers, there must be a telephone hotline where employees can report anonymously if employers require vaccination and of course sanctions must also be imposed against these companies,” said the foundation last week.

It now seems that this is being followed up. Gijsbertha indicates that employees can report their complaints anonymously to SOAW. In response to these reports, the ministry will then talk with the employer concerned.
