The COVID situation at CMC escalates

Main news | By Press release March 21, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao Medical Center cancels all operations of this Monday March 22nd and Tuesday March 23rd that are not related to Emergencies. Patients will receive a call from the planning department to reschedule their appointments. CMC will send out another announcement this week if additional operations after Tuesday will need to be canceled. All clinical appointments will resume as usual.

Until Sunday afternoon, the amount of COVID-19 infected patients totaled 23, with 12 in the Intensive Care department and 11 in the COVID-19 department. Of the 23 patients, four are from Bonaire as Curaçao has extended help out to our sister island Bonaire seeing that they are unable to accommodate all their COVID19 patients in their hospital.

The increase in the cases resulted into our Intensive Care (IC) department converting into a complete COVID department, while the IC patients not related to COVID were transferred to the Coronary Care department.

The specialists are noticing an increase in younger patients in their 30s and 40s, which was not the case previously. This may possibly be a result of the British strain.

CMC has also noted that many COVID-infected patients are showing up at the Emergency department without previously contacting their General Practitioner or Family Doctor. CMC asks the community to please contact their General Practitioner or Family Doctor and not to show up at the Emergency department without doing so. This is to help us avoid a further unnecessary spread of the virus. Your General Practitioner will advise if you need to go to the Emergency room and will assist you in this process.

As a final note, if you are eligible for the vaccine and have not signed up to receive this yet, please do so via the www.bakuna.cw website to help us avoid a further spread of the virus.

For the latest information, follow the Curaçao Medical Center Facebook page and the Extraordinary Government Press Conference tomorrow at 11.30am.
