WILLEMSTAD - Parliament approved an aviation tax of 4.50 guilders per passenger yesterday. According to Minister Charles Cooper, this so-called Passenger Security Over Charge is necessary to help Curaçao aviation again to status 1 of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The levy is based on a total number of passengers per year of 820,000 and should bring in 3.7 million guilders. That money will go into a special fund to pay for, among other things, training that is necessary to obtain the required certifications so that Curaçao regains category 1 status. Now that parliament has agreed, the necessary legislation must be made to collect the aviation tax.
