WILLEMSTAD - The Protestant Christian Education Association (VPCO) has sent a letter to the parents of students at Marnix College. The letter was sent in response to police check at the school.
At the VMBO school, investigation was conducted into the presence of drugs and weapons during which students were searched. With several them this was not done in a safe way.
According to VPCO, it has never happened before that the police have searched in this way. According to the school board, the last check took place four years ago, the letter states.
The management and the school board were not aware of the way in which the inspection was carried out. They indicate that no more checks are carried out, unless they are assured that it is done in such a way that the school board supports it.
Students should feel safe. The school asks whether the parents of the students want to report to the school board.
The Curaçao Police Force will further investigate the actions of officers the school. That's what Chief of Police Raymond Ellis said during a press conference today. During a check for weapons and drugs, students were reported to be randomly selected in groups of two. In a separate room, they were then asked to undress and bend over to check if they had any drugs hidden in their underwear.
The police action has caused a lot of consternation. The police regret that the incident led to traumatic experiences for students and parents. An in-depth investigation is underway into what happened at the school.
