War in Ukraine possible consequences for Curaçao

Main news | By Correspondent March 1, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The war in Ukraine could have consequences for Curaçao, according to political parties PAR and PIN.

The consequences will mainly be seen in an increase in energy and water prices. This is because of sanctions imposed on Russia. PAR concludes that this will make life more expensive as a result.

In addition, the ties that Venezuela and Cuba have with Russia are dangerous. “Russia's foreign minister recently said it would not rule out sending troops to Venezuela and Cuba,” PAR said.

PIN states that if the war hits Europe, it will also have an effect on tourism. For that reason, the party wants to know what kind of projects the government wants to set up to compensate for this possible loss.

According to the parties, the war is now coming close to Curaçao. PIN would like to see investments in agriculture to be able to provide for its own food production.

Both PAR and PIN have put questions to Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas via the President of Parliament. The questions concern, among other things, the presence of a safety net for the weaker in society and whether contact has been made with the Prime Minister or the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.
