Working group on rapidly rising fuel prices established

Main news | By Correspondent March 22, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - In anticipation of a price increase for gasoline in April, the Minister of Finance Javier Silvania and the Minister of Economic Development Ruisandro Cijntje organized a brainstorming session. In this session, the possibilities of limiting a price increase of petrol were considered. A working group has also been set up to consider legislative changes to keep fuel prices affordable.

One of the proposals is to remove the links in the sales tax. If this is realized, the suppliers of petrol will have the option to offset the sales tax paid by them to Curoil against sales tax they receive from the consumer.

It has also been proposed to lower excise taxes on gasoline. The necessary calculations must be made for this. These measures should not negatively affect the country's budget. That is why the effects on the public treasury must first be mapped out.

During the brainstorming session, a working group was created consisting of the Bureau Telecommunications and Post as initiator, the Fiscal Affairs Sector, Curoil, the Tax Audit Office Foundation, as well as officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Economic Development.

This working group will work on the relevant legislative changes to introduce the possibility of settlement. They will also make the necessary calculations to determine how the costs for the national treasury can be covered.

The next meeting will take place in the course of next week.
