Tourism/Travel | By Correspondent January 12, 2026

AMSTERDAM – The TUI flight from Amsterdam to Curaçao that turned back near Ireland on January 10 did so because of a technical irregularity, according to a statement from TUI Netherlands. An unusual odor was also detected on board during the flight.

TUI explained that reduced water pressure was identified while the aircraft was en route, causing the onboard toilets to malfunction. In addition, a smell was noticed whose source could not immediately be determined.

As a precautionary measure, the flight crew decided not to continue the journey and returned to Amsterdam. TUI emphasized that the safety of passengers and crew is always its highest priority.

The aircraft later landed safely at Schiphol Airport and is currently undergoing a thorough inspection by the airline’s technical team. Passengers from the affected flight were assisted in Amsterdam. Travelers who were waiting in Curaçao for the return flight were also informed and supported.

TUI confirmed that a replacement flight has since been scheduled and is set to depart from Amsterdam to Curaçao later today.
