THE HAGUE – A key unanswered question in the debate over Venezuelan oil shipments concerns ownership and financial benefit. Dutch MPs are pressing the government to clarify who owns the oil stored in Curaçao that was delivered by the tanker Regina and who ultimately profits from its sale.
They argue that as long as ownership structures remain opaque and there are strong indications that international rules may not be fully respected, such oil should not be transported through the Kingdom of the Netherlands at all.
The MPs are also asking whether Dutch authorities are in contact with Curaçao’s government about the situation and, if not, whether such contact will be initiated urgently. According to them, the lack of transparency undermines trust and exposes the Kingdom to legal, reputational and political risks.
For Curaçao, the questions underscore how global energy politics can quickly turn local port activity into an international issue with far-reaching consequences.
