WILLEMSTAD – The government is repositioning the New Market, better known as Plasa Nobo, as a core project for economic and tourism development in Curaçao. This is outlined in a letter from Minister of Economic Development Roderick Middelhof to the standing parliamentary committee for Economic Development.

According to the minister, the redevelopment of Plasa Nobo fits within a broader vision aimed at strengthening economic activity and tourism. The market is being reintroduced as a vibrant, safe, and accessible meeting place where the local economy, culture, and tourism intersect. The building is intended to function not only as a marketplace, but also as a showcase of Curaçaoan identity, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurship.

Middelhof notes that several structural and technical challenges emerged during the implementation phase of the project. These issues required adjustments to the existing construction as well as compliance with updated building and safety standards. As a result, both planning and execution were revised to ensure a sustainable and future-proof outcome.

Safety is described as a key focus within the redevelopment. In addition to structural safety, social safety is being explicitly incorporated into both the design and execution of the project. The ministry is working in coordination with relevant services to implement measures aimed at ensuring that visitors, entrepreneurs, and employees can move safely in and around Plasa Nobo.

The minister also places emphasis on the position of small-scale vendors within the project. Plasa Nobo is designed as an inclusive economic space that offers real opportunities for small entrepreneurs, artisans, and food vendors to market their products and services. The approach includes affordable access, support for local talent, and the creation of growth opportunities, with the aim of contributing to broader prosperity and increased economic participation.

The letter was addressed to the standing committee of the Staten van Curaçao, which is expected to further discuss the project in the context of economic and tourism policy.
