Meeting with Governor Focuses on Recognition of Tambú as Cultural Heritage

WILLEMSTAD – On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the Governor of Curaçao, Mauritsz de Kort, received Lizette Sambo-Velder, Sector Director of Culture and Sports at the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport (OWCS), for a working meeting at the Governor’s Office. She was accompanied by her colleague Aisha Gijsbertha-Leer, a cultural anthropologist.

During the meeting, discussions focused in part on the ongoing process to recognize Tambú as intangible cultural heritage of Curaçao. The participants exchanged views on the steps involved in formal recognition and the importance of safeguarding this cultural expression for the future.

Attention was also given to the evolving role of Tambú within the Afro-Curaçaoan historical and social context. The discussion explored how Tambú has developed over time and the significance it holds today in terms of identity, cultural expression, and heritage preservation.

Governor De Kort expressed his interest in the progress of the recognition process and emphasized the importance of carefully documenting and transmitting intangible cultural heritage to future generations.

The meeting was attended by Lizette Sambo-Velder, Governor Mauritsz de Kort, and Aisha Gijsbertha-Leer.
