WILLEMSTAD – Tourism generated 5.3 billion guilders for Curaçao last year, accounting for around 10 percent of the island’s gross domestic product, according to Roderick Middelhof, Minister of Economic Development.
Middelhof described the past year as a record year for tourism, with nearly 800,000 visitors traveling to Curaçao. December stood out as the strongest month ever recorded for the island, underscoring the sector’s continued momentum.
Overall, Curaçao’s economy grew by three percent, while the tourism sector expanded by ten percent, significantly outperforming the broader economy. According to the minister, this rapid growth also brings increased responsibilities for both the government and the private sector.
One of the concerns highlighted is visitor safety. In 2024, an average of around fourteen tourists per day were victims of theft or robbery. These incidents were reported to be mostly non-violent, but nonetheless raise concerns about the overall visitor experience and Curaçao’s international reputation as a safe destination.
Middelhof stated that discussions are ongoing with the Ministry of Justice to address the issue and to explore measures aimed at improving security in areas frequented by tourists.
The figures once again confirm tourism’s central role in Curaçao’s economy, while also highlighting the challenges that come with sustained growth, particularly in maintaining safety, infrastructure, and quality of life for both residents and visitors.
