World Baseball Classic 2026 Set to Be Biggest Ever with Stars and Strong Fields

Local, | By Correspondent February 3, 2026

MIAMI – The sixth edition of the World Baseball Classic is shaping up to be the most competitive and highly anticipated international baseball tournament in history, with Major League Baseball (MLB) confirming that all of the top national teams will participate with their biggest stars. The final rosters for all 20 participating countries, including the Kingdom of the Netherlands, are scheduled to be announced on February 5, 2026.

The tournament, widely regarded as the unofficial world championship of baseball, will be held from March 5–17, 2026, with pool play beginning in several host cities including Miami and Houston in the United States, San Juan in Puerto Rico, and Tokyo in Japan.

Netherlands in Pool D Against Tough Competition

The Kingdom team of the Netherlands will compete in Pool D in Miami, facing off against Venezuela, Nicaragua, Israel and the Dominican Republic from March 6–11 at loanDepot Park.

Under the leadership of manager Andruw Jones, the Netherlands is expected to field a strong squad featuring several established professionals. Among the anticipated players are Xander Bogaerts, Ceddanne Rafaela and Kenley Jansen, who has announced that this will be his final WBC appearance.

The Netherlands enters the tournament with confidence following their success in European competition, having recently claimed the 2025 European Baseball Championship.

Tournament Overview and Star Power

The 2026 WBC is expected to feature marquee MLB talent from across the globe. Team USA, one of the favorites, has confirmed the participation of stars including reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge. The Dominican Republic, another powerhouse nation, is boasting an impressive roster with Juan Soto, Jeremy Peña, and Oneil Cruz among its offensive threats, and is widely projected to contend for top honors.

Meanwhile, Venezuela will compete with veteran leadership anchored by Salvador Perez, who was named national team captain, adding depth and experience to a competitive lineup.

Warm-Up and Format

In advance of pool play, teams including the Netherlands are scheduled to hold warm-up matches. The Dutch team will train in Sarasota, Florida, and play exhibition games against MLB club sides such as the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays ahead of the main event — a final tune-up before opening against Venezuela on March 6.

From March 6–11, each team in Pool D will play round-robin games, with the top two advancing directly to the quarterfinals, which remain scheduled in Miami and Houston on March 13–14

High Stakes and Global Attention

With star-studded rosters and increased global interest, the 2026 World Baseball Classic promises intense competition and a showcase of international baseball talent. For Curaçao and the Kingdom team, this tournament represents both a chance for redemption after a first-round exit in 2023 and an opportunity to measure themselves against the world’s best.

The official team announcements on February 5 are expected to set the stage for one of the most exciting editions of the Classic to date.
