Netherlands Urges Calm, Echoes EU Call for Respect of International Law

World news | By Correspondent January 7, 2026

BRUSSELS, THE HAGUE – The Dutch government has aligned itself with a European Union statement calling for calm and restraint following the arrest of Venezuela’s president, emphasizing the need to respect international law.

The EU declaration, supported by 26 member states, warns that the U.S. operation raises legitimate questions about compatibility with international legal norms. While the Netherlands stopped short of condemning the action outright, it stressed the importance of preventing further escalation.

Foreign Minister David van Weel confirmed that he raised these concerns directly with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a phone call, underlining the Kingdom’s priority: regional stability and the safety of its Caribbean territories.
